생활 성화 (Practical Sanctification)

예수님을 믿는 순간 우리에게 놀라운 신분의 변화가 일어납니다. "영접하는 자 곧 그 이름을 믿는 자들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨으니" (요한복음 1:12). 우리는 예수님을 구원자로 영접하는 순간에 하나님의 자녀가 됩니다. 이 얼마나 놀라운 일인가요? 하나님이 우리의 든든한 서포터가 되어 주십니다.

그러나 하나님의 자녀로 살아간다는 것은 특혜만 누리는 삶이 아닙니다. 하나님의 자녀답게 성숙해져야 합니다. 이 성숙해 가는 과정을 성화라고 합니다. 크리스찬들이 예배 드릴 때, 기도할 때, 찬양을 부를 때는 좀 더 거룩하고 좀 더 성숙한 모습으로 보여지기도 합니다. 그러나 신정한 성화의 과정은 우리의 일상적인 삶에서 나타나야 할 것입니다. 이것을 생활 성화라고 합니다. 생활 성화는 우리의 치장된 모습이 아닌 자연스럽고 꾸밈이 없는 성숙의 상태를 보여주는 바로미터라고 해도 과언을 아닐 것입니다.

성화는 생활에서 흘러나와야 한다. 성화는 자신을 위하지만 동시에 타인을 위한 것이다. 남들을 웃게 하는 것, 행복하게 하는 것, 그들을 성공시켜 주려 노력하는 것, 넘어진 자들을 일으켜 세워 주는 것, 이런 것이 성화다. 친절하게 전화하고 전화받으며, 공손히 인사하고, 자리를 양보하며, 휴지를 아무 데나 버리지 않을뿐더러 주워서 휴지통에 담고, 공공장소에서 큰 소리로 떠들거나 말하지 않으며, 식당에서 종업원이라고 함부로 대하지 않으며, 공짜라고 반찬을 너무 많이 달라고 하지 않는 것. 이런 것이 성화다. 성화는 여행지에서도 나타나야 하고 화장실에서도 나타나야 한다. 백화점에서도 엘리베이터에서도 운동장에서도 나타나야 한다. 우리 신앙 생활은 나 자신만을 위한 것이 아니라 타인을 위한 것이기도 합니다. 우리의 성숙한 모습이 일상적인 삶에서 나타날 때 빛과 소금의 역할을 충실하게 감당할 수 있을 것입니다.

The moment we believe in Jesus, an amazing change in our identity takes place: “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). The very moment we receive Jesus as our Savior, we become children of God. How incredible is that? God becomes our strong supporter.

However, living as God’s children is not just about enjoying privileges. We must grow in maturity as befits God’s children. This process of growing in holiness is called sanctification. When Christians worship, pray, or sing praises, they may appear a bit more holy and mature. But the true process of sanctification should be revealed in our everyday lives. This is what we call practical sanctification. Practical sanctification is not about a polished or decorated appearance; rather, it is a natural and unpretentious state of maturity—a true barometer of spiritual growth.

Sanctification must flow out of daily life. It is for oneself, but at the same time, it is for others. Making others smile, making them happy, helping them succeed, lifting up those who have fallen—this is sanctification. Speaking kindly on the phone and answering courteously, greeting politely, giving up your seat, not throwing trash on the ground but picking it up and putting it in the bin, not speaking loudly in public places, not treating restaurant staff rudely, not asking for too many free side dishes—these are acts of sanctification. Sanctification should be evident when traveling, in restrooms, in department stores, in elevators, on sports fields. (Source: Kang Jeong-hoon, “Life of Holiness”)

Our spiritual life is not only for ourselves but also for others. When our maturity is displayed in everyday life, we will faithfully fulfill our role as the light of the world and the salt of the earth.
