영적 지경을 넓히라 1 (Expand Your Spiritual Territory 1)

사람은 누구나 익숙한 곳에 머물고자 하는 본능이 있습니다. 내가 잘 아는 환경, 내가 감당할 수 있는 수준의 일, 그리고 내 생각의 틀과 경험 안에 머물 때 우리는 안전하다고 느낍니다. 그러나 신앙생활은 그 안전지대를 벗어나 하나님이 예비하신 미지의 땅으로 전진하는 모험입니다.

마치 저희 가정이 시드니를 떠나 오렌지라는 미지의 땅으로 온 것과 같습니다. 얼만 전에 시드니에서 장을 보고 있었는데 시드니 수정 교회 성도분을 만났습니다. 시드니에서 장을 볼 때면 꼭 누군가 아는 분을 만나는데 이번에는 누구를 만나게 하실까 궁금해 지기도 합니다. 이번에 만난 분이 이렇게 저에게 말했습니다. “(오렌지로 이사해서 교회 개척을 했으니) 용감해요!” 신앙생활은 안락하게 머무는 것이 아니라 용기있게 모험을 감수하고 앞으로 전진하는  것입니다.

그래서 내가 지금 살아가는 방향과 모습을 정검하면서 현재 내 신앙의 상태를 살펴 보아야 합니다. 만약 우리가 같은 수준의 기도, 같은 깊이의 헌신, 같은 범위의 영향력에 머물러 있다면 그것은 안정이 아니라 영적 정체일 수 있습니다.

여호수아 1장 3절에서 하나님은 약속하십니다. "너희 발바닥이 닿는 곳은 어디든지 내가 너희에게 주겠다." 이미 주시겠다고 약속하셨지만, 조건이 있습니다. 직접 가서 밟아야 합니다. 이스라엘 백성이 요단강 앞에 가만히 서 있었다면, 가나안 땅은 영원히 남의 땅이었을 것입니다.  두려움을 무릅쓰고 강물에 발을 내디뎠을 때 강이 갈라졌고, 여리고 성을 돌았을 때 성벽이 무너졌습니다.

우리의 영적 지경도 마찬가지입니다. 우리에게 허락하신 지경을 넓히려면 발로 직접 다니면서 밟아야 합니다. 잃어버린 양들에게 여전히 다가가서 우정을 쌓아야 합니다. 때론 무례하고 말이 안 통하는 양들이 답답하게 할지라도 그 답답함을 주님의 사랑으로 밟아야 합니다.

2026년에 하나님께서 기쁨넘치는 교회의 영적 지경을 넓혀주시기를 간구합니다. 동시에 이것이 하나님이 기대하시고 계획하시는 일이라고 믿습니다. 하나님께서는 어떤 교회가 정체되거나 퇴보하기를 원하지 않으신다는 것을 알기 때문입니다. 새해 영혼구원이 일어나고 각 사람의 삶이 변화하여 더욱 더 건강한 공동체로 세워지기를 기대해 봅시다.

Expand Your Spiritual Territory 1

All of us have a natural tendency to stay where we feel comfortable. When we’re in a familiar environment, doing things we know we can handle, and living within the limits of our own thinking and experience, we feel safe. But the life of faith isn’t about staying safe. It’s an adventure—stepping out of our comfort zone and moving forward into the unknown place God has prepared for us.

In many ways, that’s exactly what our family did when we left Sydney and moved to Orange, a place that was completely unknown to us. Not long ago, I was grocery shopping in Sydney and ran into someone from Sydney Crystal Church. Almost every time I shop in Sydney, I end up seeing someone I know, and I sometimes wonder, “Who will I run into today?” When we wre talking about moving to Orange to plant a church, they said to me, “You’re brave.” And that really stuck with me. Faith isn’t about settling into comfort—it’s about having the courage to take risks and keep moving forward.

That’s why we need to stop and take a good look at the direction our lives are heading and honestly examine where our faith is right now. If we’re still praying at the same level, serving with the same level of commitment, and influencing the same small circle year after year, that may not be stability. It might actually be spiritual stagnation.

In Joshua 1:3, God says, “I will give you every place where you set your foot.” The promise is already there, but there’s one key part—we have to actually step forward. If the Israelites had just stood at the edge of the Jordan River, the land of Canaan would have remained out of reach. But when they stepped into the river, even with fear in their hearts, the waters parted. And when they walked around Jericho, the walls came down.

The same applies to our spiritual lives. If we want the territory God has given us to grow, we have to walk into it ourselves. We have to keep reaching out to the lost and building real relationships with them. Sometimes those sheep are difficult, awkward, or even frustrating to deal with. But even then, we’re called to step over that frustration with the love of Christ.

As we step into 2026, I pray that God will expand the spiritual territory of Joyful Church. And I truly believe this is God’s heart and God’s plan. God does not want His church to stand still or move backward. Let’s look forward to a new year where lives are changed, souls are saved, and our community grows into a healthier and stronger body of Christ.
